About Magistrate William Kelly

U.S. Magistrate Judge William (Bill) Kelly was born and raised in Illinois. He graduated from Brown University in 1990. In 1995 he enlisted with the Iowa Army National Guard and joined ROTC while he was a student at Drake University Law School. After earning his law degree in 1999, he was commissioned into the Judge Advocate General Corps in 2001 and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he was awarded the Bronze Star in 2011. Judge Kelly served as a law clerk and eventually as a litigation shareholder at the Davis Brown Law Firm (now Dentons Davis Brown) from 1998-2015. He has served as a certified mediator since 2001. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at Drake University Law School teaching Pre-Trial Advocacy. Judge Kelly served as an Iowa District Court Judge for six years before he was officially sworn in as a United States Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Iowa on March 27, 2023.
